On April 3rd, 2024, the Samruk-Kazyna Fund hosted the “Samruk IT Meetup 2024,” showcasing important advancements in Secure Cloud-Native Infrastructure (SCNI) modernization. This event aimed to drive innovation and improve IT security across the Fund’s portfolio companies. Our IT team, in collaboration with experts from SUSE, Core24 and the Qazaq Open Source Initiative (QOSI), unveiled an Open Source SCNI stack crafted for scalability and enterprise-level robustness.

Event Highlights

Open Source Infrastructure Blueprint

We presented a thorough blueprint for deploying SCNI using solely open-source technologies. This blueprint covers infrastructure, management, security, and productivity, proving to be efficient and cost-effective by eliminating licensing costs and enabling smooth scaling.

Key open-source components included:
Infrastructure Foundation: SUSE Harvester, Rancher, and NeuVector formed the backbone of our secure cloud environment, adeptly managing Kubernetes clusters while ensuring strong data protection.
Management Stack: We deployed tools like GitLab, Ansible, and Prometheus to automate CI/CD pipelines, monitor infrastructure, and simplify the development process.
Security Stack: Enhanced security was achieved through the ELK Stack for log analysis, Suricata for intrusion detection, and Zero Trust principles using KosmWeb and Teleport.
Productivity Stack: We utilized Mattermost for communication, Nextcloud for secure file sharing, and Kanboard for effective project management.

Expert Contributions

  • SUSE: Their experts highlighted the deployment of SUSE Harvester for virtual machine management and the Rancher platform for centralized Kubernetes management, underlining NeuVector’s unique security capabilities that safeguarded containerized workloads.
  • Core24: The Core24 DevOps team shared their experience managing over 150 Kubernetes clusters, demonstrating their expertise in security analytics, vulnerability assessments, and CI/CD automation.
  • EPAM: Representatives from EPAM discussed their role in developing AI-based Risk Assessment Governance (RAG) systems and their contributions to AI-driven solutions for secure cloud management.

Qazaq Open Source Initiative (QOSI)

As the founder of QOSI, I highlighted the significance of open-source solutions in modernizing Kazakhstan’s IT infrastructure. By embracing open source, we ensure that enterprises of all sizes can access flexible, secure, and scalable technology without the constraints of proprietary software costs. The event reaffirmed our commitment to promoting open-source development and collaboration within the region.

Final Thoughts
